The rain held off for the sunrise service, though Chilmark was shrouded in a misty fog.
9:00 a.m. – Easter Worship
Rev. Stoddard preached on Jesus’ words to Mary at the tomb: “Do not be afraid,” reminding us that God is always with us. Jesus (Emmanuel) means “God is with us.”
Sean MacMahon sang his composition “The Tomb is Empty” (see below).
“Very early on Sunday morning the women went to the tomb, carrying the spices they had prepared. They found the stone rolled away from the entrance to the tomb, so they went in; but they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. They stood there puzzled about this, when suddenly two men in bright shining clothes stood by them. Full of fear, the women bowed down to the ground, as the men said to them, ‘Why are you looking among the dead for one who is alive? He is not here; he has been raised.’” (Lk. 24:1-6)
lyrics
The tomb is empty
So is the world
There’s nothing for me
Here, my Lord
The tomb is empty
Alone and bare
There’s nothing that I can
Take with me there
The tomb is empty
The grave is dark
The Holy One entered
And then left the ark
The tomb is empty
The body’s gone
What is this light?
It’s not yet dawn
The tomb is empty
The women said
The Lord is alive
He’s not dead
(The tomb is empty
So is the world
There’s nothing for me
Here, my Lord)
