Celebrating 2024: A Year of Faith and Fellowship

“This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.”

As 2024 draws to a close, these words feel like the perfect way to describe this remarkable year at the Chilmark Community Church. It was a year that marked a fresh chapter as an independent congregation and one filled with moments of faith, joy, and community that truly let the light of this church shine across Martha’s Vineyard.

Under the thoughtful guidance of Interim Minister Charlotte Wright and the musical passion of Music Minister Sean McMahon, the church has deepened its role as a place where people come together to share, celebrate, and support one another. This year, we found countless ways to gather in fellowship, bring hope to our neighbors, and celebrate the enduring power of faith.

Here’s a look back at some of the highlights from our year:

Highlights from 2024

Offering of Music and Light
On the first Sundays of December, January, and February, we hosted evenings of music and art that lit up the darkest days of winter. Island artists and musicians shared their talents, creating a sense of warmth and community when it was needed most.

Saintly Suppers
During Lent, we gathered for Saintly Suppers, where we learned about the lives of saints like St. Joan, St. Patrick, and St. Peter. With study, song, and themed meals, we reflected on their stories of faith and resilience and how they can inspire us today.

Easter: Flowering of the Cross
One of the most beautiful moments of the year came during Holy Week, when the Flowering of the Cross transformed a symbol of darkness into one of life and hope. On Easter Sunday, we celebrated the resurrection with hearts full of joy, proclaiming together, “He is risen indeed!”

Spring and Fall Pizza Nights
Sometimes, the simplest gatherings are the most meaningful. This year, our spring and fall pizza nights brought friends, families, and neighbors together for good food, games, and laughter.

Blessing of the Fleet
Memorial Day weekend, we carried on the cherished tradition of the Blessing of the Fleet at Menemsha Harbor. With prayers for safety and prosperity, we gathered to honor those who work and play on the sea and to celebrate the beauty of life on the Vineyard.

Lobster Rolls and the Chilmark Flea Market
Summertime was alive with activity as we served up lobster rolls and took part in the Chilmark Flea Market. These events not only helped raise funds for the church but also created opportunities to connect with neighbors and visitors alike.

The Celebration
This special event brought our community together to share the church’s story—past, present, and future. Through food, music, and heartfelt storytelling, we honored the resilience and faithfulness that define this “New Old Church.”

CROP Hunger Walk
In the fall, we joined the Martha’s Vineyard community in the CROP Hunger Walk, raising funds to fight hunger both locally and globally. Walking together in faith and solidarity was a powerful reminder of the impact we can make when we come together.

Christmas Eve
We ended the year with the glow of candlelight and the hope of the Christ light at our Christmas Eve service. It was a beautiful reminder that the peace and joy of this season are gifts we carry with us into the new year.

Carrying the Light Forward

2024 has been a year filled with moments of joy, resilience, and connection. Through worship, fellowship, and service, Chilmark Community Church has continued to shine as a source of light for our community and beyond.

As we look ahead to 2025, let us carry that light forward. Let us continue to gather, celebrate, and serve with open hearts and hands. And let us remember that even the smallest acts of love and faith can brighten the world around us.
