Welcome\u00a0to Chilmark Community Church of Mather\u2019s Vineyard, MA. Our Church family is\u00a0happy you are worshiping with us.<\/div>\n
Today\u2019s readings from both the Jewish and Christian Scriptures speak to us of change. Mark\u00a0tells us that on the Sabbath Day the Rabbi Jesus went to the synagogue and the people were<\/div>\n
astonished because he \u201c\u00a0taught as one having authority and not like the scribes.\u201d\u00a0Mark\u00a0continues by pointing out that there was a man with an unclean spirit among the worshipers<\/div>\n
who cried out,\u00a0\u201cWhat have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?<\/div>\n
Have you come to destroy\u00a0us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God.\u2019 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, \u2018Be silent, and<\/div>\n
come out of him!\u00a0\u2019<\/div>\n
And the unclean spirit, throwing him into convulsions and crying with a\u00a0loud voice, came out of him.\u00a0All who were present were amazed, and they kept on asking one\u00a0another,<\/div>\n
\u2018What is this? A new teaching – with authority!\u2019\u00a0At once Jesus\u2019 fame began to spread\u00a0throughout the surrounding region of Galilee.\u201d Jesus did many things that were new and\u00a0different. This was certainly a change from the ordinary!<\/div>\n
\u00a0What would you have said and done if this happened in your church?\u00a0I am sure each of you\u00a0would have reacted differently: some would have been happy for the man,\u00a0some would have\u00a0avoided dealing with the issue, some (like the scribes) would have become disgusted that this\u00a0man was present and some would have totally rebelled against Jesus. Avoidance and being\u00a0afraid of dealing with ministering to certain kinds of persons is a sign of insecurity and a lack of\u00a0 faith in God. When the children of Israel were afraid Moses told them that God would send<\/div>\n
another leader like him (Moses) to teach them and show them what God\u2019s will was for them.\u00a0Are you overly concerned and afraid if you feel you are not in charge and control?\u00a0Let us be<\/div>\n
sure of one thing: God is calling us to ministering in all kinds of different ways and to all kinds of\u00a0different persons. Remember the story of Jonah from last week. Jonah was called to go to<\/div>\n
minister to the worst enemy of God\u2019s people, Israel!<\/div>\n
Be blessed as you worship the great God of challenge!<\/div>\n
