{"id":5868,"date":"2019-07-01T13:53:07","date_gmt":"2019-07-01T18:53:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chilmarkchurch.org\/service\/?p=5868"},"modified":"2019-07-01T13:53:07","modified_gmt":"2019-07-01T18:53:07","slug":"there-be-giants-in-the-land-by-vicky-hanjian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chilmarkchurch.org\/service\/index.php\/2019\/07\/there-be-giants-in-the-land-by-vicky-hanjian\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;There be giants in the land&#8221;  by Vicky Hanjian"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThere be giants in the land\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Numbers 13:1-3a;17-33<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Matthew 28:5-10<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Chilmark Community Church<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">June 30, 2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Perception is a really curious human phenomenon. There is the old clich\u00e9 observation that if four people witness an automobile accident, there will be four different descriptions of what happened &#8211; each person believing that they saw accurately. Moses sent 12 men, representing each of the 12 tribes out into Canaan to scout out the land and bring back a report about what they found.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">They were supposed observe whether the land was good, what kind of people lived there, whether there were settlements?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Or were there armed fortresses? Moses asked them to bring back some produce so he could see what the land produced &#8211; whether it was fertile or not.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is clear that this was not an espionage assignment &#8211; too many men were going and Moses would not have risked losing so many leaders in a spy operation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It seemed like a prudent thing to do &#8211; to scout things out before making a huge leap into the unknown. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The men returned with mixed perceptions about what they saw.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The majority report, on their return, was full of dire warnings &#8211; \u201cYes &#8211; &#8211; the land IS flowing with milk and honey and look at the fruit we brought back &#8211; &#8211; it takes two men to carry the bunches of grapes we found.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>BUT the people who live there are strong and the towns are big and fortified &#8211; and we saw giants there.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Their report instilled fear in the people when they heard it -and they took up their 40 year long chant &#8211; \u201cwe would have been better off back in Egypt\u201d &#8211; -\u201cit would be better for us if we had died there or at least if we had died in the wilderness.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It seemed as though they had learned nothing from their 40 years of sojourning with God and Moses.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>At the slightest provocation, their fear took over and they yearned for the security of the good old days which weren\u2019t that great, but which were familiar and predictable. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">As a church community, Chilmark Community Church is on the brink of yet another \u201ccrossing into Canaan \u201d &#8211; &#8211; into a land that God will show you on the other side of July 1st.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Next week, you will welcome a new pastor who will lead you in new and unfamiliar ways.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Most likely you will spend a period of time adjusting to one another, discovering which expectations are realistic and which ones need to be moderated.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There may well be a lot of mixed perceptions as part of your conversations as you begin a new life with a new minister.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">I have no doubt that you will be the welcoming congregation you have always been as you and Ernest Belisle find your way together into being God\u2019s people in a new land of relationships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">But that does not make the transition easy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There seems to be<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>an unspoken, unwritten<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>expectation, I think, that churches will be able to weather the anxiety and stress of<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>changes in leadership gracefully and without a lot of questions about what comes next. In the Methodist tradition, congregations are asked<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>to place a lot of trust in the \u201cscouting party\u201d &#8211; the SPRC &#8211; and in the District Superintendent.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is actually quite natural to wonder about the giants in the land.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"> Among the men who returned from the scouting party there was also a minority report from Caleb and Joshua &#8211; they stood up in the community and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>said<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>-\u201cHey -wait a minute &#8211; -\u201cThe land through which we passed to scout, the land is very, very good.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cIf the Lord favors us, He will bring us to this land and give it to us, a land that is flowing with milk and honey.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And there is this curious admonition: <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201c\u2026. do not rebel against the Lord\u2026 do not fear the people of the land, for they are our bread, their shade has turned from them and the Lord is with us. Do not fear them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The Hebrew is translated in a number of ways &#8211; the idea is that \u201cthese possible enemies are like our bread -we will consume them\u201d <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In the desert regions where the story takes place shade was scarce and it was sought out as protection for both humans and animals in the heat of the day.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Joshua and Caleb report that whatever protection the perceived enemies enjoyed has disappeared.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Joshua and Caleb had a different perception of the possibilities in Canaan.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They were ready to move forward into the land.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">While some of the scouts felt like powerless grasshoppers in the face of the giants they perceived, Joshua and Caleb saw possibility in the place where God was leading them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">On the threshold of any transition, there may be appear to be giants in the land &#8211; &#8211; sometimes they come in the form of<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>unvoiced anxieties that come with another substantial change in the life of the Chilmark Church.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">And even though the report of your \u201cscouting party\u201d has come back in a pretty positive way, there may still be a <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>chorus of anxious inner whispers that ask \u201cHow will things change?\u201d \u201cWhat will be different?\u201d \u201cWhat if we don\u2019t get along?\u201d \u201cWhat if they don\u2019t like the parsonage?\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cWhat if the island is too rural?\u201d \u201cWhat if he picks hymns we don\u2019t like?\u201d \u201cWhat if we don\u2019t understand each other?\u201d \u201cWhat if he doesn\u2019t love us?\u201d \u201cWhat if\u2026.?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What If\u2026?\u201d \u201cWhat if\u2026\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Giants in the land.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">As we reflected on what<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>a new appointment might mean for Ernest and his family, we thought that perhaps they might be having the same inner wonderings about the giants they might encounter when they get to the Vineyard &#8211; \u201cWill we and the congregation be good working partners?\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cWill the school system serve us well?\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cWhat will it be like to adapt to living on an island?\u201d \u201cCan we afford to be there?\u201d \u201cWill our son make new friends?\u201d \u201cWill we be able to get the medical care we need in an emergency?\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cAnd what about all those tick borne diseases?\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">There were consequences for the Israelites who feared the giants in the land.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In their fear, they demonstrated to God that they were simply not ready to take responsibility for their future yet.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Their distorted perceptions<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>of slavery were a safer bet.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They did not get to enter the land.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Those who were able to listen to<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Joshua and Caleb followed them and the adventure of the ages began as Israel established itself in the land.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Mary Magdalene and the other Mary<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>encountered the same fear of \u201cgiants in the land\u201d at the empty tomb.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>With the crucifixion, they were plunged into a strange borderland without Jesus\u2019 leadership and friendship to guide them and they were afraid.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But they were not left to stay in their anxiety about what would come next. The minority report came in the words of the messenger at the tomb : He\u2019s already gone on ahead of you &#8211; &#8211; go to Galilee and you will see him there &#8211; &#8211; they start to run in both fear and joy &#8211; &#8211; and Jesus greets them on the way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">So -perhaps that is what is in store for Chilmark Community Church -whether we use the metaphor of entering the promised land or running along the road to Galilee as a new ministry begins here &#8211; &#8211; in either or both stories, the truth is the same.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When change is inevitable, it is the presence of God with us on the road into the new land that guides and protects and informs and keeps us whole.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Our prayer for you as you move forward is that you will be blessed with the knowledge and assurance that the Presence of God and the power of the Holy Spirit<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>go before you and accompany you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">May you enter the land with excitement and joy as you greet your new pastor and knock out those pesky giants together.
