{"id":5729,"date":"2019-02-20T11:32:55","date_gmt":"2019-02-20T16:32:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chilmarkchurch.org\/service\/?p=5729"},"modified":"2019-02-20T11:32:55","modified_gmt":"2019-02-20T16:32:55","slug":"march-devotional-from-d-s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chilmarkchurch.org\/service\/index.php\/2019\/02\/march-devotional-from-d-s\/","title":{"rendered":"March Devotional from D.S."},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>March 2019 \u2013 A Gentle Tongue<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>Read Together:<\/b> A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Proverbs 15:1<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">When Gideon headed into battle, he took with him only one hundred men-a meager group compared with the vast army of the Midianites they were up against.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But God was in control, and he caused the Midianites to turn against one another.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Gideon\u2019s army simply sat back and watched as their enemy defeated themselves.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Not one of the one hundred men had to draw their sword.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As the remainder of the Midianite army fled, Gideon called warriors from the Israelite tribe of Ephraim for help in finishing the job.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They cut off the Midianites\u2019 escape route, and Israel defeated its enemy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">But after the fighting stopped, the Ephraimites came to Gideon and angrily demanded to know why they had not been called in the first place to help in the battle.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cWhy have you treated us like this?\u201d they whined.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cAnd they criticized him sharply\u201d (Judges 8:1). <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">It would have been easy for Gideon to respond harshly to their criticism.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When we feel attacked or criticized, its human nature to feel defensive and lash back at those who make us feel that way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">But responding harshly to strong words is a sure way to escalate a conflict.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Instead of adding fuel to the fire, Gideon chose to douse the flame with soothing, soft words:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cWhat have I accomplished compared to you?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Aren\u2019t the gleanings of Ephraim\u2019s grapes better than the full grape harvest of Abiezer?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>God gave Oreb and Zeeb, the Midianite leaders, into your hands.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What was I able to do compared to you?\u2019<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>At this, their resentment against him subsided\u201d (Judges 8:2-3).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Maybe people skills came naturally to Gideon.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Perhaps he know the only way to calm the Ephraimites\u2019 anger was to give them credit for the positive things their participation had accomplished.
