Armen Hanjian<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">MARK 10:32-34; 11:1-11(NEB) <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>PALM SUNDAY<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">In Mark we are told, \u201cThey were on the way, going up to Jerusalem. Jesus was going ahead of them\u2026.\u201d What a picture.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Having visited Israel 7 times, I can easily imagine Jesus walking along a dry dusty road near the Dead Sea, the lowest spot on earth, 1300\u2019 below sea level, passing thru the treed oasis of Jericho and then trudging the uphill way on a 22<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>and \u00bd mile journey to the city of Jerusalem \u2013 2400\u2019 above sea level.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jerusalem \u2013 a walled city built on a hill for protection.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jerusalem \u2013 the place where people lived out their lives \u2013 the rich their way, the poor their way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">They were on the road going up to Jerusalem, Jesus leading the way; and the disciples were filled with awe; while those who followed behind were afraid.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That description of followers \u2013 some filled with awe and some filled with fear \u2013 tells me there is more than one image of what was happening.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">For years the Hebrew people were in subjection to foreign rule \u2013 at that time it was Roman rule.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The people of the land had various hopes and expectations as to how God would eventually free them.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Some believed it would be on the last day &#8211; The Day of the Lord \u2013 filled with dreadful<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">conflict and with a general resurrection.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Others, like the zealots, wanted to achieve national liberation by force and believed that such action would reveal (bring to the forefront) the hoped for Messiah.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Then there were the Pharisees who didn\u2019t approve of a revolution; they believed God\u2019s Messiah would appear in God\u2019s good time \u2013 in the line of David and thru him the Law would be fulfilled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Who knows all the thoughts and camps represented in the train that followed Jesus to Jerusalem?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In the popular mind, on that Palm Sunday, people assumed the Messiah would be a political hero.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We don\u2019t know the number in the crowd when Jesus arrived at the city; evidently it was large since the officials of the province felt threatened.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Likely, never before had the time been so ripe for a political uprising.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s no wonder that some looked at Jesus with awe and some, knowing the power of principalities, looked with fear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">In the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Robe<\/span><span class=\"s1\">, Lloyd C. Douglas tells of a slave called Demetrius who on Palm Sunday pushed his way through the rejoicing crowd surrounding Jesus to get a good look at him who was being proclaimed.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Later he was discussing his experience with another slave who asked, \u201cSee him close up?\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Demetrius nodded. \u201cCrazy?\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cNo.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201c\u201dKing?\u201d \u201cNo,\u201d muttered Demetrius, \u201cnot a king.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cWhat is he, then?\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cI don\u2019t know, mumbled Demetrius in a puzzled<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>voice, \u201cbut \u2013 he is something more important than a king.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">When a king <\/span><span class=\"s2\">directs<\/span><span class=\"s1\">, you follow.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Your only a subject, a pawn, a near nothing.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus, on the other hand, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">leads<\/span><span class=\"s1\">.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We follow and we become and we become like him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Jesus didn\u2019t succumb to being crowned a king.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He entered the city in a well-planned manner.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Which included riding on the colt of a donkey \u2013 symbolic not of a conquering king, but of a messiah.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Isaiah described the messiah as a suffering servant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThey were on the road going up to Jerusalem, Jesus leading the way\u2026.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">That was a perfect, a natural way for Mark to state it, for right from the start of his ministry as all four Gospel writers testify, Jesus calls persons to <\/span><span class=\"s2\">follow<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> him.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cIf anyone would come after me,\u201d he said, \u201clet him deny himself, take up his cross and follow me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Let us consider, this Palm Sunday morning where he <\/span><span class=\"s2\">led<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> his disciples,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Where he <\/span><span class=\"s2\">leads<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> us, and how we may <\/span><span class=\"s2\">follow<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Where did he lead his disciples?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Whenever some one leads, he or she comes close to misleading.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Surely, there were those who read Jesus to be leading a bloody revolution.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I believe his intent was not that \u2013 that was not his way.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When Jesus overturned the tables of the money changers and sellers of pigeons, it was likely a protest that the temple was being misused.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus was not intent on being a troublemaker, but he was troublesome, just as prophets usually are.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">His disciples who followed him found themselves led to places of power like the Temple, led to challenge practices that burdened God\u2019 s children, led to conflict with civil authorities and led to speak up for the truth at times and at times silently affirm the truth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Throughout the Gospels people looked to Jesus for answers and for leadership.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>But what they found was often surprising and different from the ways of the world.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Anton Jacobs writes: \u201cWhen they want answers, he speaks in parables.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When they want it easy, he makes it hard. When they want it hard, he makes it easy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When a rich man comes to Jesus, Jesus tells him to sell everything he has and give it to the poor.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When a woman starts bathing his feet in an expensive perfume and Judas argues that it could sold and the money could be given to the poor, Jesus tells him the poor will always be with you.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And the one time Jesus seems to conform to their messianic expectations is on his final triumphal entry into Jerusalem, which is then followed not by his coronation but by his crucifixion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">The disciples didn\u2019t have it easy <\/span><span class=\"s2\">nor<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> do <\/span><span class=\"s2\">we<\/span><span class=\"s1\">.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Just where does Jesus lead you and me?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Like the disciples of old, he has much to overcome in us<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Not to lead into temptation but into paths of righteousness.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The truth is we are already very much following others: patterns set by our parents, older brothers or sisters or teachers who became our heroes and not all their leadership was in healthy directions.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In addition, we have the tendency to follow the herd, to do what everyone else is doing rather than doing the right.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus gave us clear warning: \u201cIf the blind leads the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Where <\/span><span class=\"s2\">does<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> he lead us? Certainly to peace, but not the peace that is \u201cpeace and quiet\u201d, with no controversy, no stimulus, not the peace of a boat harbored, rather, the peace of a vessel moving through rough waters towards its destination. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">For Paul, peace turned out to be sleepless nights, beatings, imprisonment at the end; For Father Damien, a lingering horrible death from leprosy in a leper colony.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Joy tuned out for Peter to be a crucifixion and for Dietrich Bonhoeffer, execution by the Nazis. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">(ideas from Edmund Steimle)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">And if we follow his leadership we may well get into conflict, sacrifice and death- perhaps not by execution, but by the strain and stress of<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> our <\/span><span class=\"s1\">ministry.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He calls us to redeem the world and we know so little about doing it.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He demonstrated the only force that will work and what do we do?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We spend our time meeting budgets, oiling church machinery, coddling saints and compiling statistics.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We seek persons to join our church because it brings financial and social prestige, but the one dominating force<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>which should compel us to seek people is the force that drove Jesus to Jerusalem \u2013 love.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">How do we follow Jesus?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>By loving him, by loving him above self and above others.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cGoing to Jerusalem in the sense that Jesus faced it, means going from the place of comparative security to the place of danger, from the place of comparatively little cost to the place of tremendous cost.\u201d &#8211; Interpreter\u2019s Bible 7:810<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Does he lead you? Does he lead me?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Does he affect my budget in major ways, in every column?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Does he affect my use of my time?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Would those about me be surprised about my being a Christian?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What is my embarrassment level?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Would I speak up for the right in any situation?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">What risks would I take to be a faithful follower? One measure to tell whether Jesus is leading you is do you wait to be asked or do you follow by offering yourself, by doing in his behalf, by loving God in each human being?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">In a small country church where scriptures passages were written on the walls, a passage from John was written in an unusual, but most insightful way: \u201cI am the way, the truth and the life if you love me.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Unless we love <\/span><span class=\"s2\">him<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> he will not be for us the way.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Unless we love <\/span><span class=\"s2\">others,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">We will not be following him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">In John Bunyan\u2019s <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Pilgrim\u2019s Progress<\/span><span class=\"s1\">, when Christian and his friend Hopeful are within the site of the Celestial City, just one last obstacle remained.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Picture it.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is a deep, threatening river over which there is no bridge.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The prospect of having to swim across stuns them both.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Christian, especially, is filled with fear and seeks another way.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But when assured there is none, that, if they are to get to their destination, they must cross it, they commit themselves and enter the water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Soon, Christian begins to sink and in panic cries to Hopeful: \u201cI sink in the deep waters; the billows go over my head; all<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>the waves go over me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Then it is that Hopeful calls back: \u201cBe of good cheer, my brother; I feel the bottom and it is good.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">You and I follow One who has gone ahead of us into the future, who has faced everything in life and death we will ever face \u2013 and who calls back as Hopeful called to Christian,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cBe of good cheer,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I have gone ahead and feel the bottom, even God, and have found God to be good.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">On the landscape of human existence, there was never a person quite like this Jesus.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>So, like the disciples of old, I follow him with awe, and I invite you to deny yourself, take up your cross and follow him.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>JESUS LEADING THE WAY March 20, 2016 Chilmark Community Church Rev.
